Making a spectacle

So I have just over a week until my driving theory test. I’m reasonably confident but intend to keep working for it up to and including Friday night.

This, of course, brings into focus (groan!) the fact that my eyesight doesn’t appear to be what it was. The canteen at work has pool tables and one day a couple of weeks ago I walked in to find that someone had left some balls on the table. I used to be a fair pool player, although I haven’t picked up a cue for years. I thought I’d have a couple of quick pots and was horrified to find that the edges of the balls were a bit blurry. I guess it could be that I was tired but I fear that before I actually get behind the wheel of a car I may have to get my eyes tested.

I’m not sure how I’ll look in glasses, should it come to that. I’ll certainly need some assistance in choosing frames to suit me. I like the idea of contact lenses but can’t see myself being particularly comfortable about putting them in. One of my nervous tics is rubbing at my eyes, which definitely wouldn’t mesh well with contacts.

The thought of being able to drive at last is kinda exciting. It’ll open up a range of possibilities for me that I’ve never had before and take away my reliance on public transport or the goodwill of others for transport. And it’s a good time to be shopping for a car, apparently.

Oooh! Huge, jaw-cracking yawn. Right, I have to be up early to catch a bus so it’s bedtime for me.

Say nighty-night…..

I think you'll look yummy in glasses. *RAWR*

Lenses are okay - I got my first pair when I was about 15 (OH. MY. GOOODDDD!.That wasn't really 30 years ago, was it? Crapola) They were called "semi-permeable", which meant they allowed your eye to breathe under them Unlike the hard ones which I remember my brother flying to London to get when he was about 16. You couldn't get lenses in Oireland then and he needed them for rugby. So he had hard lenses that covered his whole eye, sat behind the eyelids, top and bottom. Yeurgh je pense.

Anyhoo, I loved wearing lenses because , of course, when I was a teenager, there were only limited styles and it didn't matter if you were 6 or 60! Jam jars. The lenses worked well until I drunkenly slept in them a few times and my eyes said "Feck off for yourself!" so I stuck to the glasses only for a while. P loved the jam jars and didn't want me to get what I considered to be cool new specs, but what he considered stupid, poser, granny tiny glasses. Luckily my optician thought he was a moron (insightful man!) and persuaded me otherwise so the new glasses look was born for me, only about 6 years ago.

I still wear lenses sometimes. They are weekly wear, and I only use them occasionally so they last a good while. I find it so easy to put them in and take them out but I'm still useless with the hygiene. Probably wake up one morning blind. Gasp. I probably shouldn't say that, should I. My Dad is half-blind, you know that, don't you? Blew one of his eyes clean out with a firework when he was 19. (He clearly "didn't know what was going on....ni ni ni ni ni ni nineteen!"

So. You. And glasses. It's not so bad. Actually it's great when you can see clearly, isn't it? (Apart from when someone leaves smudge marks on your lenses when they kiss you :D) It's great when it's not just because you have sparkly glasses with the perfect prescription. But when you have the clarity that comes from knowing what and where you want to be.

So I'll help you pick out funky frames if you want, and challenge you to a game of unblurry pool in the canteen, and I'll happily be your passenger when you get your car, and your license, and we can drive off into the perfectly focused sunset.

I love that comment.

And I love the lady that left it.

The pool that you used to play was under the influence. The problem now, is that you tried to play pool not under the influence, have a few jars and try again, guaranteed will work.
As for lens, if I can get on with them then anyone can. I'm with Polly though I only wear my lens now occasionally, usually here when I want to wear my sunglasses.
Glad you guys are good. Good luck with the theory, though you will fly through it. :) w x
